I would have a lot more Twitter and Tumblr followers if I didn’t write about politics so much. I know that. I would also have an ulcer built on blind rage and misdirected contempt. So here — have some of my spleen juice. I try to only blog about politics when I feel like a topic has been omitted from the discourse. I try VERY HARD to not contribute to the political echo chamber by just restating the obvious or the already stated. So excuse me while I offer my thoughts on the controversial voice vote from yesterday.

Is no one going to say that the Democrats didn’t boo God but instead booed changing their platform under pressure from fake Catholic Paul Ryan? I can’t presume to read the minds of the thousands of delegates in Charlotte - and neither can you — but can we not just simplify it to “LOOK- DEMOCRATS BOO GOD AND ISRAEL!”

No, the Platform, until yesterday, did not mention God. Nor does the Constitution, except for one mention of ‘the year of our Lord.’ Paul Ryan made a stink (not news), the Democrats caved (not news) and there was dissent on the floor. I think the dissent has to do with a party sick of pandering to the right, not with a stadium filled with atheists booing the Lord. There are thousands of people in Charlotte. My guess is a few of them go to church. It is silly and disingenuous to reiterate the lie that the Republicans have the market cornered on worship. I know this is so much easier to talk about than the nuts and bolts of economy, but easy is not always right. We have to be better about this. We have to allow for real debate. If it means we spend less time on Twitter with its 140 character messaging, then GREAT. LET’S DO THAT.

And one more thing: the Democratic Platform, unlike the Republican platform, now affirms Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
